Morenci Cross Country
Morenci High School’s Cross Country Program began in the Fall of 2010. Coach Ken Lester began with just enough boys to have a 5 man squad (5-7 are team requirements). Having found that, in the 80s and 90s Morenci Track had been one of the preeminent distance programs in the state with several great milers, a Cross Country was proposed by Coach Lester with the intent of building better distance competitors for Track & Field. Eventually a larger Boys team resulted in a more competitive squad. While it took several years, the program eventually acquired enough girl runners to have a girls’ team compete at meets. In 2015 the girls squad was sectionals runner ups and placed 10th at the state meet under the leadership of Paige Morales. The Morenci Boys were sectionals runner-ups two years in a row in 2012 and 2013. This team produced Daniom Tecle who runs Track and Cross Country for the University of Arizona. Daniom used Cross Country to make the Track team and become a very competitive 1500m runner. Daniom was also the 800m. State Champion in 2013 as well as the anchor on the record setting 4x400m relay in 2013 (2x state champions). In 2017 Morenci Boys posted their highest finish yet at state, garnering a 6th place finish with all seven runners returning!
Cross Country training can be extremely demanding, and requires great patience and perseverance. In order to meet the physical, mental and energy demands of the sport one must be able to sustain their motivation. We emphasize maintaining motivation and proper perspective over the LONG HAUL. Unity, being goal oriented and placing excellence over competitiveness is essential as Cross Country meets are won by teams who can work the hardest, and execute intelligently as well as maintaining pack unity and morale. We build competitors who will be excellent citizens, students and parents. Cross Country is boot camp for life. The process is painful and the learning curve steep, but at the end we produce young men and women who can stay motivated in the harshest of realities and will themselves to do absolutely anything they set their mind to. In the process we stress unity, sportsmanship and winning with class. We make friends everywhere we go and respect our competition, and everyone else we meet! A Morenci HS Cross Country athlete is prepared for whatever life throws at them!
Some of our most successful athletes have been students with no running history. Running is a lifestyle that must be learned. It takes year round application to become great, but your talent level in the beginning has little to do with your long term success. If you are a hard worker, or want to become one we have the change that you need. Join us and become elite!
Just contact Coach Ken Lester at any time (contact information below)-or any cross country athlete. Prior to the season (August-November) we run all summer long. If you would like to join us for summer runs to see if it’s for you, please come out to the picnic tables behind the locker rooms (football field) at 6pm. You will be welcomed!
