Congratulations to Destiny Lamoree, a senior at Morenci High School, on earning the Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest honor in Girl Scouts.
Destiny has been a Girl Scout since second grade, when she joined as a Brownie alongside her cousin. What started as a simple decision quickly became a meaningful journey filled with sisterhood, growth, and leadership.
Over the years, Girl Scouts gave Destiny a place to belong and grow. Once the younger Scout who looked up to others, she now serves as a role model for those following behind her. Outside of Girl Scouts, Destiny has always loved music. She has been involved in music since kindergarten and plays the tenor drum in marching band. Giving back to her community has also been important to her, and that passion helped guide her Gold Award work.
Her Gold Award project began with a simple moment. While exchanging postcards with a pen pal troop, Destiny realized there were no postcards that represented Morenci. That observation sparked her project, Then and Now.
Destiny dedicated more than 150 hours to the project and created over 2,000 postcards highlighting Morenci. The postcards have been shared at community events, donated to the Greenlee County Museum and Visitor Center, and enjoyed by people well beyond our town.
Reflecting on the experience, Destiny shared, “This experience taught me that I have the ability to make a big impact if I try hard enough. I’ve always heard the phrase ‘you can do anything,’ but it didn’t really click until I saw how many people were impacted by my project.”
When asked what she would tell younger students, Destiny was honest and encouraging. “The experience was definitely worth it. I won’t sugarcoat it. If a young girl wants to earn the Gold Award, it will be a lot of work, but there’s something really special about the impact it makes.”
We are incredibly proud of Destiny for her leadership, creativity, and the lasting impact she has made through her Girl Scout Gold Award project.
