Morenci Celebrates 50 Years of Wildcat Football History
On October 16, Morenci High School welcomed back members of the 1976 Wildcat Football Team to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their championship season. Former players, coaches, and families gathered on the field to recognize a team whose accomplishments remain an important part of Morenci's athletic history.
Under Head Coach Cliff Martin, the 1976 Wildcats finished with an impressive 11–1 record. Their only loss came against Santa Rita, a much larger school competing in a higher division. After completing the regular season 9–1, Morenci defeated Ajo 21–8 in the playoffs before earning a 39–7 victory over Page in the championship game.
During the ceremony, former Assistant Coach and Athletic Director Tom Powers and Assistant Coach Steve Chavez were recognized alongside 13 members of the championship team:
Juan Borjon (#1)
Steve Lopez (#10)
B.B. Encinas (#11)
Edmund Lopez (#20)
D.J. Marin (#21)

The evening also included a special remembrance of Head Coach Cliff Martin, players Rick Benitez (#65), Ruben Quiroz (#74), and Benny Sanchez (#70), and team managers Chuck Hampton and Calvin Hardcastle, all of whom have passed away.
The celebration brought former teammates and families together to share memories and honor the people who contributed to an unforgettable season.
Fifty years later, the 1976 Wildcats are still giving Morenci something to be proud of. Their championship season is part of the tradition that continues to bring generations of Wildcats together.
